What’s doin’
Feb 26th, 2007 by jennie
UGH! This is the worst. I just wrote a long post and then lost the whole thing. Motivation to post = zero.

What must be said? The Northern Lights mittens (shown here basking in the thursday afternoon sun) are on hold, while I attempt (and attempt. and attempt.) to rechart the fingers. We’ll see if I knit them shorter or not.

Pomatomus #2 was almost completed while I waited for the kitties at the vet this morning (no worries — they’re fine. Just needed their shots and some paperwork to take the the northernlands). I had to set it down when I came home, however, because on Wednesday afternoon I leave for Pittsburgh, where I am supposed to be reading a paper at the annual Society for American Music conference. It seems like it might be a good idea to write the paper some time soon. That is tonight’s project.
So, while I go think about the problems with bluegrass historiography, and try to write a paper that’s not too pissy, I leave you with some shots fromm my weekend.
I drove down to Boone, NC to do some research, taking in a square dance and throwing down while some friends played their monthly gig at the Mast General Store. It was good times.

While there, I ate some truly superb food as well.

A breakfast of biscuits and gravy. Who needs anything else?

Homemade pickled eggs. Yum. Now before you turn away in horror, let me tell you that once upon a time, I thought pickled eggs were the definition of disgusting. I’d see them sitting there in a big jar behind the counter in a gas station and want to wretch. But this? This is the best pickled egg in the world, prepared by my friend John’s wife Carol (who is also the most incredibly crocheter — is that how you say that? — and quilter. I wish I’d had camera batteries to take pictures of this bedspread she crocheted). These eggs are the perfect combo of hardboiledness, sweetness, and vinegary tang. Carol made a jar for me to take home with me (which I meant to save until I got up North, but couldn’t resist opening this evening for a treat) and now I know how to make them, so I’ll never be deprived (pickled eggs this good, I imagine, might be hard to come by in Philly).
Off to write. Happy Monday, all!
I LOVE the music in the general store! That’s an awesome picture. My friends had a bluegrass band at their wedding, and I adored the human percussionist, as I called him.
Pickled eggs, huh? I tend to like pickled things–can I get the recipe? Or is this going to be a most-protected secret?
good luck with the mitts and the paper!
when i lived in lafayette there was a little music shop in eunice that had a jam on saturday mornings — lots of fiddlers and accordion players=lots o’ fun!
Good luck with the paper writing. I hope it comes together quickly in a way that works for you.
The pickled eggs sure are pretty… Like a Dr Suess book! Good luck sorting out that mitten. But I’m just thinking - it’s resisting you so hard… maybe it isn’t meant to be??? Good luck at your conference!
Sorry if this is an often-answered question I missed, but what does “throwing down” mean?
Gorgeous mittens! I love the colors! Not so sure about the color of the pickled egg-it sounds good-but the color makes look a little unappetizing! The “throwing down” at the General Store looks like a riot!
Beautiful mittens! If you really don’t like the color, I’d be willing to take them off your hands. Yukyukyuk. Or I could trade for a pickled egg recipe.
Seriously, pickled eggs are something you could have anytime. My not-so-DH missed them terribly, so I finally decided to make them and it was a snap. Mine aren’t pink, so your friend may have a secret ingredient, but all I do is boil the eggs and put them in vinegar mixed with jalepeno juice and a few peppers after they’ve cooled and been peeled. They are ready in a day or two.
such amazing knitting! i am so incapable. it looks so beautiful!
