Madder Cow socks
Mar 19th, 2007 by jennie
I’m at school, where the internet works with glorious speed. So here’s the first of several delayed posts:

Better late than never — I finished these Friday. They were meant to be my Sock Madness qualifying socks, but I just don’t knit that fast. It’s just as well, because I realized half way down the foot of the first sock that I didn’t actually follow the pattern as written. Thus, “Madder (as in more mad that originally intended) Cow.”

Pattern: Mad Cow Socks, from Sock Madness, Elimination round
Yarn: Regia Silk, color #053, 1 skein; Claudia’s Handpainted, color “Blue Terra Cotta”, 1 skein
Needles: Susan Bates, 2.25 mm dpns
Thoughts: well, I modified the stripe pattern by accident, but I actually love the way it looks. I did a short row heel because the pattern called for it, and in the Sock Madness game, you had to adhere to the pattern as written. I’d like to say, for the record, that I just don’t like doing short row heels. Mine always look sloppy and I always get really frustrated in the middle. That said, these socks fit really well. I don’t know if it’s the yarn (soooo buttery soft, both of them) or the pattern, but I’m really happy with them.

So here in Philly, we got over three inches of sleet friday, straight sleet with no snow. It was pretty messy out. Here’s the view out of my apartment window at 5 p.m. friday night. It didn’t stop sleeting until almost 10.

I went for a walk just before the sun set, and it was icy and slick, but also so beautiful. I wish I’d had my camera. Now everything is a slushy, icy mess. And by friday it’s supposed to be 70 degrees again. Gotta love March.
Even if you didn’t qualify, they came out great! Love the colors and the mod to the strip pattern.
Love the socks. The striping is sublte, but very fun.
Love the socks! Great choice in colors. I bet they are super soft, I’ve felt Regia silk before and I want some.
Great socks! What a nice combination of colors. And I love that you have a violet in bloom right now.
The socks look fabulous! I really like the striping. Have you tried this short row heel? I’ve heard nothing but good things about it. http://misocrafty.squarespace.com/journal/2006/9/21/short-row-heel-tutorial.html
I am very behind on my blog reading but I just wanted to say “Welcome back to civilization”!
And the socks are really lovely (I’m not a big fan of short row heels either).
Ooh, ooh! Lovely socks! I love the colors!
I love these socks! Such a good idea to stripe a solid with a handpaint. (Note to self: Steal Jennie’s good idea.) And any socks that can be described as “buttery soft” are winners, of course.
my dad leaves the hills of home every winter for warmer climes - he’s due to return from central america in a week - my guess is he’s looking at the tri-state area weather forecast with some serious concern!
Oh the socks look great!
