Calling all music lovers…
Mar 20th, 2007 by jennie
Since the photos-function of my internet is still painfully slow, and because I like to keep y’all in suspense about my beautifully organized kitchen, I thought I would put out some feelers about a swap I’ve been wanting to throw together. Here’s the deal — I love music, which you might have figured out by the fact that I study music or by the fact that I sometimes wax rhapsodic about its transformative powers. But lately, I’ve been feeling the need for some new music — not necessarily new music as much as new to me music. I’m in a bit of a listening rut, and since I just moved to a new apartment and a somewhat new city, it seems maybe some new tunes are in order. And so I am proposing the following –
The Great Mix CD Swap of 2007 (or something)
The basic idea: each of us creates a mix CD (anywhere between 14 and 21 songs, in my mind, although this is open to conversation); We then swap said CD with another individual, who has made a CD for someone else, etc. The sound-swap could also include yarn (’cause who doesn’t like yarn?) or any other kind of crafty goodness (like creative CD cover-art… ’cause that’s the one part of mix tape exchanges that I miss the most). Suggestions more than welcome.
I’ve been working out the details in my head, but in order to figure out how to do it, I need to have a rough estimate of how many people might be interested in participating. If there’s only 5 or 6 folks who want to do it, then we might do a multiple CD exchange (i.e. we give the same CD to more than one person) on a smaller scale. But I’m kinda sensitive about copyright laws and stuff, and if there are many people interested, there will probably be a little more structure, with swapees being designated, and possibly (possibly) matched up on sonic likes and dislikes (for example, I’d hate for someone who hated classic country music to get paired with me, ’cause I love it. Or at least, I should know they don’t like classic country. You get my point).
SO. All of this is to say — if you think you might be interested in participating in an exchange of tunes, drop me a comment here, or an e-mail at twinknit AT gmail DOT com. Feel free to pass news of the swap to anyone you think might be interested. And if you have advice, suggestions, and/or thoughts about the organization or details of the swap, please let me know! Once I have a sense of interest, I’ll post more.
Rock on.
I’d like to swap music. But since I can’t use the equipment to make a mix, I’ll swap yarn for music. I know you like that idea! What kind of a deal do you want to make with me?
I love the idea, but being in a different country from you, I’ll sit it out. The copyright thing is just too tangly when it goes international!
Well, I love the idea! And yes, I’m in the UK, but why not? Let me know how you go on, I’ll be in!
i’m up for it!
I’m in. Rudi and I love music and have an extensive collection I’d love to share bits of…
Count me in! I’m always looking for new music to broaden my horizons.
Count me in. I’ll have to use my neighbor’s CD burner, but I’m sure she won’t mind. I love all sorts of music. Throw some yarn in there and it just sweetens the deal.
I’ll play!
I’m in! I’ve done a mix cd swap on swapbot before and it was pretty cool.
It was that last bit about classic country that hooked me. I can’t commit for certain but I am interested.
[…] is organizing a mix cd swap, possibly with yarn involved. Let her know if you’re interested in participating. Y’all […]
Oh, you know I am all over this. I wanna swap music!
This sounds great! I hope there’s a way to pair people who have compatible musical taste.
I want to swap music! I’ll get you all addicted to Girlyman! *insert gleeful hand-rubbing here*
Ooo, I’d love to be in on it! It has been nearly 2 years since my last mixed CD swap. If non-knitters, but other creatives are welcome my DH may also be interested…
Count me in! I think I have the ability (hardware and software wise) to accomplish this. Will experiment tonight.
Way fun! I’m in. I’d be happy to do international exchanges (I’m in the U.S.).
I love both yarn and mixes- count me in! I have a “this is the music I spin to” playlist all lined up!
I love the concept… I am in…
I always love new music and particularly love World Cafe on NPR for it.
What a cool idea! Count me in!
I’d totally be in for this swap. I love me a mixed CD
Sounds great! I am in the UK too - maybe we could do a UK/Europe swap if there are copyright issues? Happy to help with logistics if needed.
Wow! I’m so behind in blogging this week, I’m glad I didn’t miss this!
I am sooo up for this swap! I was actually thinking of you the other day when I popped in one of my favorite mixed cd’s & wondering if you were still going to put this all together. Look, here it is!
Let me know if you need any help at all!
I’m in! I have a great knitting playlist that I’ve been developing over the past year … it’s really goofy, but it follows the progression of a project from beginning to end.
Jennie, just catching up on blogs and I’m keen to play swaps. Fiver works in music copyright. You’re correct, there is no legal basis for mix CD’s without a license. That said, people who work in music copyright don’t really want all the kids ringing them up to get permission for personal uses like this!
Do you know that it is the best time to receive the loan, which can help you.
