Rainy Day Yarn
Apr 9th, 2007 by jennie
It’s funny to post with a title like that when the sun is shining as aggressively as it is today. But Lolly asked:
Do you have a little bit of luxury in your stash that you can’t wait to work with?
Why yes, yes I do.

This is Filatura di Crossi “Luxury” 100% silk in a beautiful dusty pink (the color of the tulip tree in my backyard!). I have 8 skeins of this (at 160 yards/skein), which I bought when I went to Memphis over a year ago. I love it… on bad days, I take it out and look at it. Occasionally, I’ll knit a swatch with it, which I then rip out. I think I’m afraid to knit with it. I got it for such a deal and it’s a yarn I could never normally afford. I don’t want to waste it. Any pattern ideas? I’ve been thinking a camisole (I bought it with the cami from Last Minute Knitted Gifts in mind, but I hate that lace panel at the bottom) or a cap-sleeve, scoop neck top. It’s just such beautiful yarn…

And now for something remarkable. In my easter basket, I found this:

The first skein of yarn I’ve received as a gift from my mom — er — the Easter Bunny. She bought it so I could make her a pair of fingerless gloves, exactly like the endpaper mitts I made her before, but with out the pattern (not because she doesn’t like the pattern, but she wanted something that would match her fleece) — not unlike these, I imagine. Beautiful yarn, beautiful color. Nothing like knitting for hire!

What about Dashing, from the new Knitty? I love my Fetchings and I bet the longer version is equally as nice…
Sorry. I realized afterwards that my comment could be misinterpreted. I meant for your mom’s gloves, not for your lovely silk. That I have no suggestion for. But it looks absolutely lovely and soft.
Oh, I know what you mean about yarn too precious to knit…
Yum, YUM! I’m so into silky blends right now. I want that pink yarn–it is ever so pretty.
Your mom recognizes the good stuff!!
That yarn is luscious. No suggestions–but definitely go with something that you can wear right next to your skin. You’ll want to get every ounce of pleasure out of that yarn! (but always wash it right away after you wear it; silk is finicky.)
What a great color of Lorna’s! Those mitts will be beautiful.
There are heaps of nice camisole patterns in Vintage Knits, and there are a few nice ones scattered through recent Interweave Knits… I think the ‘Lace Nightie’ (I can barely bring myself to type those words) from the internet content of the current issue of IK could be well modified to suit the yarn and your requirements… but 8 skeins would be enough for something more substantial than a cami… hmmmm, save it for a rainy day I say!
Those are lovely luxuries. But they would also be luxurious knitted up - go for it!
Lovely lovelies!! I can’t wait to see what you knit with them!
what amazing luxury! that silk…..wow!
thanks for stopping by and commenting on my socks - I wanted to reply back, but didn’t have an email!
Ohhh, Luxury! I have knit an Orangina/Pinkina with only 4 skeins of it, for me it’s the Queen of all yarns, silk, that’s plied and just perfect in every aspect! Don’t let it sit in your stash, something lovely for summer would be just perfect for it!
