I’m home, after a lovely, if exhausting vacation. I’m swamped with work, and feeling particularly unfocused, so I’m going to try not to use blogging as a procrastination today. But I’ll leave you with some photos from my trip (if you’re really interested, there are more on my flickr page).

My dad’s family has a camp on Lake George in the Adirondacks, around the quiet side of the lake, far from the tourists and the chaos. Growing up, my family went there for the two hottest weeks of August every summer (an incredible respite from the Virginia heat), and it is one of my favorite places on earth. There is something about the smell of the forest, the way the mountains descend to the water, the sound of the screen door slamming against the porch, the refreshing (read: freezing) quality of the water at 7 a.m… There is something inside me that just feels at peace up there.

This weekend, I didn’t go to my camp, but rather spent a few days at my friend Greg’s house for a “dissertation retreat” — just me, Greg, and Jennifer. Greg and I are in grad school together. You may remember him from the cutest picture of a tiny baby lamb known to man. It was a pleasant coincidence, early in grad school, when we both realized we had spent our summers in the mountains, not two hours from each other.

Greg’s camp has no road access, so to get anywhere, you need to take a boat. So once we got out there, we were pretty much alone. We did take trips in to the store every day, but otherwise… it was just us and ourselves, a nice break from the city.

[knees = vacation, for some reason]
I got a lot of good thought-time in on this chapter. What once seemed unmanageable now seems feasible, with a little dedication. I also got a lot of work done on New England Sock #2 (this is what happens when you bring only one knitting project with you for four days. Forced committment). I’m looking at an FO on that sock before I leave for Kentucky next week.

It was a beautiful week, but I’m glad to be back in the city. I hope you all have a lovely weekend!

oh, i’m so jealous! sounds like a great week. we’ve been going down to swim in lake washington here in seattle a lot these past few weeks, but i would love to spend a whole week down on the water!
Between you and Ms. Frick, I’m really wishing i had a place like that, that has always meant summertime to me. Your pictures are beautiful.
*sigh* It sounds wonderful.
gorgeous photos. sounds like a lovely place to vacation.
I feel the same way about going to my Aunt’s camp in the Adirondacks too. Her place is about 65 miles north of Lake George in the high peaks region. I’m heading up there in 2 weeks for the Essex County Fair (demolition derby! Woot!) and can hardly wait.
Sounds just perfect. When I was studying for my boards, I went to my parents’ shore house in the winter - it was isolated. And nice that way.
OMG. I couldn’t get past the picture of the lamb! Oh, it is so so so cute!
Beautiful photos! I’m feeling more relaxed and I wasn’t even there!!!
