Miraculous Yardage
Aug 26th, 2007 by jennie
We all fall into this trap — we start knitting something and suddenly, just far enough into the project that we’ve become invested, we realize there is no way we’ll have enough yarn to finish the project. In denial, we knit on — furiously, speedily, as though the faster we knit, the less quickly we will use yarn. Inevitably, we run out. But this time, I experienced the Yarn Miracle. I did not run out. And so, I present you with this sweet hat:

Pattern: Norwegian Sweet Baby Cap/Djevellue
Yarn: the leftovers from this skein of Colinette Jitterbug (thanks again Kirsten!)
Needles: US 1.5 dpns

Thoughts: This knit was, in many ways, miraculous:
1. I didn’t run out of yarn.

[a nickle’s worth left]
2. This single skein of yarn produced my Purl Beret and the matching Booties for this hat.

3. this hat took me all of an evening to knit, and is so satisfying.
A while ago, I wished for babies to knit for. Well, it seems my wish has been granted. I have two pregnant friends right now, and my cousins just had a baby. Hurrah for quick knits!
The cutest li’l hat-n-bootie set evah! I can’t believe the Jitterbug went so far — clearly it’s not really made for socks after all.
That’s a great hat & booties set - I’m sure all those coming babies will be happy their mommies know you!
Wow, you should see how short my jitterbug socks are! The Yarn Dieties must love you!
Just too cute!
So cute! I could just die from the cute, or possibly just make one of those myself. I have no pregnant friends though, so I’ll have to be content with looking at other people’s cute knits.
Wow, the colors in that yarn are pretty, pretty! I’ve never tried that yarn, but if I ever get around to knitting socks I’ll be sure to get my hands on some Jitterbug.
Hello - I stumbled onto your blog, looking for the saartje’s booties pattern… I am making the booties right now, and this is my very very first knitting project ever. I hardly know how to read a pattern. I decided to make the booties all one color - thus, I skipped the part where the pattern told me to cut yarn and continue with the CC. I just kept on knitting. Now I’ve come to the part where it says to “co 10 using second strand of CC as thumb strand.” I have no second strand! Do I have to start over? or do you have a trick to share to make the bootie straps?
Very cute! It’s it nice when things work out?
So cute! Must knit for my nephew, who will make his debut in November!
Congrats on beating the yarn at it’s own cruel game! I always seem to be at the losing end of that battle. You made two hats and booties out of one skein of the jitterbug? Awesome!
That is so cool!! I love it & it is a yardage miracle!
These are delightful, and your friends will surely adore having them (or others like them). How about putting your excellet and speedy knitting skills to use for some of the remarkably needy children in Philadelphia (the Philadelphia Area Knit Out is coming this month), or elsewhere in the US or abroad?

so, so cute!!
Darling booties! I love your “non traditional” approach to color choice for baby knits. Ughh.. I hate pastels for babies. I have been lusting after that shade of Jitterbug since it came into my yarn shop. I’ve resisted so far, but I’m so glad I have no babes to knit for or you may have sent me flying to my LYS.
